Meet Xia

Xia is eight years old.

She has been the new kid more than once, and she has gotten good at it.

Wherever Xia goes, she brings something back — a shell, a ticket stub, a coin with a face she doesn't recognize, a rock that looked ordinary until she turned it over. Every one of them is a story she's saving up.

And when the first day of school comes around and somebody asks what she did over the summer, Xia is ready.

There's an X on her bracelet. It's the first letter of her name, and it's how she knows when somebody needs a friend.
